Did you know that March 20th isn’t just another day on the calendar? It’s World Oral Health Day (WOHD)—a global movement to highlight the crucial role oral health plays in our overall well-being. At Greenbank Family Dental (GFD), we’re not just about fixing teeth; we’re about empowering our community with knowledge, care, and confidence. Because when it comes to your health, your smile is just the beginning.
The Hidden Meaning Behind March 20th
I’ll be honest—being new to the dental industry, I was surprised to learn why this date was chosen! It turns out there’s a deeper meaning:
3 represents the ideal number of primary (baby) teeth children should have at a young age.
20 represents the number of permanent teeth a healthy adult should have.
This clever symbolism serves as a reminder that oral health is important at every stage of life—from childhood through our golden years. It was one of those little details that made me realise how much thought goes into global oral health awareness.
Oral Health: More Than Just a Smile
Oral health isn’t just about fresh breath and white teeth—it’s directly linked to your heart health, diabetes risk, respiratory health, and even mental well-being. World Oral Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that prevention is key. Small, consistent habits like brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups don’t just save your teeth; they help protect your whole body from avoidable health risks.
Floss Like a Boss – The Small Habit That Makes a Big Impact
Yesterday, I had a chat with our oral hygienist Anne, and one statistic stood out—a high percentage of our patients do not floss regularly. It’s easy to neglect, especially when there are no immediate consequences. Truth be told, even the best of us get complacent with habits that don’t show instant results.
But here’s the reality: Flossing is a game-changer. It prevents gum disease, reduces the risk of cavities, and helps keep your entire mouth healthy. That’s why we’re launching our Floss Like a Boss incentive—because small, daily habits add up to big, lifelong benefits. Stay tuned for details!
Why Do People Visit the Dentist?
From what I’ve observed so far, people generally visit the dentist for one of three reasons:
1️⃣ Good oral health maintenance—keeping issues at bay with regular care.
2️⃣ An emergency that forces their hand—pain, discomfort, or an unexpected dental problem.
3️⃣ Cosmetic enhancements—improving the appearance and function of their teeth for confidence and long-term health.
One helps prevent the other. Making your dental visits proactive rather than reactive ensures your experience is positive, predictable, and pain-free. If it’s been a while since your last visit, now’s the time to prioritise the small habits that help you avoid bigger, more unpleasant issues later on.
Greenbank Family Dental: Where Passion Meets Care
At GFD, our commitment goes beyond dentistry—it’s about creating a welcoming, empowering experience that leaves a lasting impact. Our vision? To transform dental care into a positive, engaging part of everyday life, fostering healthier families and a stronger community—one smile at a time.
