Brisbane “Winter” Might Be Mild—But Your Teeth Still Feel It!

Updated: Aug 29, 2025

Let’s face it—some folks say Brisbane doesn’t have a real winter. But ask any Queenslander who’s wrestled with icy morning windscreens, brisk school runs, or foggy dog walks at 6am, and they’ll tell you: winter is real enough, thank you very much!

And while we might not be shovelling snow, our bodies (and mouths!) still respond to the seasonal shift in unique ways. At Greenbank Family Dental, we’re here to help you and your smile thrive through the cooler months.

Think winter’s no big deal for your smile? Think again! ❄️ From sensitive teeth to dry mouth and jaw tension, the cold can creep into more than just your bones.
Think winter’s no big deal for your smile? Think again! ❄️ From sensitive teeth to dry mouth and jaw tension, the cold can creep into more than just your bones.

🦷 Sensitive Teeth in the Cold?

If your teeth zing when you sip something hot or step outside into the chilly air, you're not alone. Winter can trigger tooth sensitivity, especially if you have exposed dentin or receding gums.

GFD Tip: Try a desensitising toothpaste, brush gently, and keep your mouth warm when outdoors. If the issue persists, book in—our dentists can help ease your discomfort and protect your enamel.

💧 Dry Mouth Alert!

Between dry air, heaters, and sipping more coffee than water, winter often brings dry mouth, which can increase your risk of decay and bad breath.

GFD Tip: Drink plenty of water (yes, even if it’s cold!), chew sugar-free gum to boost saliva, and avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol.

🤧 Cold, Flu & Dental Neglect

Let’s be honest—when you're sick, brushing and flossing aren’t top priority. But some medications can dry your mouth and make it easier for bacteria to thrive.

GFD Tip: Stay on track with your hygiene, rinse with water after sugary lozenges, and replace your toothbrush after illness.

🍬 Comfort Foods & Sweet Sips

Hot chocolates, caramel lattes, sticky date pudding… winter comforts can be tough on teeth. Sugary treats and hot/cold extremes can wear away enamel.

GFD Tip: Enjoy the treats, but rinse with water after and avoid brushing for 30 minutes post-sugar. Sipping sweet drinks through a straw can also help reduce contact with teeth.

😬 Jaw Tension? It’s a Thing.

Cold weather can lead to muscle tension—yes, even in your jaw. You might clench more, especially overnight, which can worsen TMJ symptoms.

GFD Tip: Stay warm, do gentle jaw stretches, and talk to us about a custom night guard if you're grinding in your sleep.

✅ Don’t Skip Your Check-Up!

Life gets busy in winter, and dental care can fall off the radar. But a quick check-up can prevent small issues from becoming big ones—especially as we head toward the end of the year.

GFD Tip: Get ahead of the game—book now and beat the holiday season rush.
