Fissure Sealants (161): Protecting Kids’ Teeth from Cavities

Updated: 12 hours ago

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a protective coating applied to the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). These grooves — called fissures — can trap food and bacteria, making them a common site for cavities.

Sealants “seal” the grooves, making them smoother and easier to clean. Think of them like a raincoat for your teeth — keeping decay out.

Why are sealants important for children?

  • Kids’ molars are especially vulnerable — new teeth have deep grooves that are harder to keep clean.

  • Sealants are preventive, not restorative — they stop decay before it starts.

  • Proven to reduce cavities — studies show they can cut decay risk by up to 80% on treated teeth.

Sealants are one of the simplest, most effective ways to keep kids’ smiles healthy as permanent teeth erupt.

What happens during a fissure sealant appointment?

The procedure is quick, painless, and requires no drilling:

  1. Teeth are cleaned and dried.

  2. A special gel prepares the surface.

  3. Sealant material is painted into the grooves.

  4. A light hardens the coating instantly.

  5. The tooth is ready to use straight away.

Kids usually enjoy the process — and we make it fun and reassuring.

FAQ

What age should kids get fissure sealants?

Usually when the first and second permanent molars erupt — around ages 6–7 and 11–13.

Do sealants replace fluoride?

No. Sealants protect specific grooves, while fluoride strengthens the whole tooth. Both work best together.

How long do sealants last?

Several years. Our dentist checks them at each routine visit and can reapply if needed.

Are sealants only for children?

They’re most common for kids, but adults at high risk of decay can benefit too.
